"Death Bed" by This Wild Life

Long Beach, California acoustic rock duo This Wild Life cover "Death Bed," the 2020 lo-fi hip hop single from British Columbia, Canada rapper Powfu.

If you don't want to stay awake for too long, it might be best to avoid that cup of coffee for your head.  According to The Sleep Foundation, caffeine can block the sleep-inducing chemical adenosine, which would bring about insomnia and poorer sleep quality.

"Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Patty Gurdy

German dark folk artist Patty Gurdy covers London, UK new wave duo Eurythmics' 1983 synth pop hit "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" using just her voice and a hurdy gurdy, and it is BY FAR the most metal thing I've heard in decades.

If this version doesn't make you want to head into Westeros and do battle against White Walkers, nothing will.

For more Eurythmics covers, Minerve's version of "Here Comes the Rain Again" can be found here, and Bubble Scum's version of "Missionary Man" can be found here.

"Shake It" by Headless Cabbage

Headless Cabbage are a group of gals from the East Lansing, Michigan area who uploaded a veritable gigaton of web covers between 2007 and 2016.

Here is their version of "Shake It," a 2008 single from Los Angeles, California neon pop band Metro Station.

This video was uploaded fifteen years ago, and I wondered how it was possible to record a cover of a song released in 2008 fifteen years ago without time travel.

Then I did the mental math, and if anyone needs me, I'll be curled up in the fetal position behind the laundry room door sobbing and eating Cheetos.

No lies.

"Swing, Swing" by Andie Case

Eugene, Oregon singer/songwriter Andie Case performs a decidedly non-emo version of "Swing, Swing," a 2002 power pop single from Stillwater, Oklahoma band The All-American Rejects.

Swing, Swing is also the apparent mantra of Philadelphia Phillies left fielder/designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who led the league in strikeouts over the past two seasons, and is well on his way to earning the dubious title for the third straight year.

But, when he gets hold of one?  Woah, Nellie....

For added freshness, several recipes suggest adding lime.

Here, they cover another soft rock hit of the '70s -- The 1977 ballad "Just Remember I Love You" by Boulder, Colorado quintet Firefall.

"Denim and Rhinestones" by Spring Lane

Umea, Sweden band Spring Lane cover "Denim and Rhinestones," a 2022 offering from Muskogee, Oklahoma country pop star Carrie Underwood.

Not sure where the band's namesake thoroughfare is located, but it definitely isn't in Umea.  Streets there have names like:

Skolgatan

Dragongatan

Signalvagen

Storgatan

Repslagargatan

According to the Babbel website, "Spring" in Swedish translates to "Var" or "Varen..." but couldn't find any streets that started or ended in Varen.  Ot Var.

"I Want You" by Cyn Gillet

French EDM musician (and kickboxer) Cyn Gillet's upbeat take on Australian duo Savage Garden's 1996 synth pop single "I Want You" is a fantastic piece of work.  Truly.  Madly.  Deeply.

"Dream Weaver" by Crowbar

Cresskill, New Jersey soft rocker Gary Wright had his 1975 hit "Dream Weaver" intertwined into a tapestry of ephialtes by New Orleans, Louisianan Cajun sludge metal pioneers Crowbar.

Nightmare inducing as their remake may be, I believe it can get you through the ni-iiiiiiiiiiiight.

"Superman (It's Not Easy)" by Plethora

Cavite, Philippines quartet Plethora cover "Superman (It's Not Easy)," a 2001 adult contemporary single from Los Angeles, California songwriter and pianist Five for Fighting.

Former Toronto Maple Leaf right winger Tie Domi holds the NHL record with 333 five-minute majors for fighting, which equates to nearly 28 entire games over the course of his career that he spent in the sin bin for fighting alone.

Switching gears completely.... when I had a hard week recently, a friend called me and said "Plethora."

That meant a lot to me.

"Pata Pata" by Los Rockin Devils

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Tijuana, Mexico '60s rock band Los Rockin Devils swap their predominantly Spanish lyrics for some in Xhosa on their cover of Johannesburg, South Africa singer Miriam Makeba's 1967 Afro-pop hit "Pata Pata."

"Pata Pata" translates to "touch, touch," and couples dancing to the song would essentially frisk each other.

Hawt.

The tune was later used in an ad for a Honda Accord Crosstour in 2010.

Also hawt.

"First of May" by The Jigsaw Seen

Los Angeles, California garage rock band The Jigsaw Seen released a live cover of "First of May," a 1969 single from Australian disco act Bee Gees.

Contrary to the song's lyrics, now that the Bee Gees are tall does not mean that Christmas trees are suddenly small.  Take, for instance, the 79-foot-tall Norway Spruce that was displayed in Rockefeller Center during the winter of 2021.

THAT'S a big ol' tree.

For other Bee Gees covers, Les Claypool's Duo De Twang's version of "Stayin' Alive" can be found here, and Pink Turtle's version of "How Deep is Your Love" can be found here.
